Emollients (i-ˈmäl-yənts)

All About Emollients

Emollients oils, butters, and additives that help keep the skin supple and hydrated.

  • Regular use of emollients is a significant part of daily management of inflammatory skin conditions like eczema.
  • There are a variety of different types of emollients ranging from runny lotions to thick ointments
  • The difference between these types of emollients is the proportion of lipids (fats, oils, waxes, certain vitamins) to water.
  • The lipid content is lowest in lotions, intermediate in creams and highest in ointments.
